Eco friendly cleaning products and why they matter for your health

What is actually in conventional cleaners, and the simple swaps that protect your family and pets.

Most off the shelf cleaners contain volatile organic compounds that linger in indoor air for hours after the surface has dried. Health Canada has flagged dozens of these compounds for respiratory and endocrine effects, especially in homes with young kids, pets, or anyone managing asthma.

The conventional all purpose spray in your kitchen likely contains a mix of glycol ethers, ammonia, and synthetic fragrance. Bathroom cleaners often add sodium hypochlorite, which produces chloramine gas if it contacts ammonia from another product. Floor cleaners commonly contain quaternary ammonium compounds that bond to fabric and re-release for weeks.

"When others don't show up, we do."

Plant based surfactants, hydrogen peroxide, citric acid, and citrus solvents handle 95 percent of household cleaning without the fumes. They cost slightly more per litre but cover the same square footage at the same cleaning power.

What we use on every Lastminute visit: certified eco friendly all purpose, hydrogen peroxide based bathroom cleaner, plant derived dish soap, microfiber for almost everything mechanical, and a steam unit for grout, tile, and upholstery. We avoid bleach unless a specific biohazard situation requires it, and we never use synthetic fragrance.

If you want to make one swap at home this week, replace your bathroom spray. It is the product that puts the most chemistry into the smallest, least ventilated room in your house.
